Beauty a curse in Bangladesh

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friendPDF versionPDF versionBy William Gomes Some people might say that beauty becomes a curse for a woman who is raped. But I disagree with the idea that the woman's physical beauty is a curse, because it is not beauty that causes sexual violence; the main cause is the beast inside of man. Not all of the women or girls who get raped exhibit extreme physical beauty. Why does the rapist not rape the mother, sister or daughter in their home who may be more beautiful than the woman or girl they rape? The question is what prevents them from raping their mother, sisters or daughter. If it is religious norms, then somehow the same religious norms fail to stop them from raping someone else. Otherwise, the news just never makes it out. In Bangladesh on any given morning, if you look at the newspaper you will see news about various forms of violence against females of different ages, from two-year-old girls to elderly women. Stories talk about girls that get raped by people outside the home, by relatives inside the home, by teachers in schools, or even by clerics in religious institutions. The victim may go to the police for justice, but then there are also cases of women getting raped inside of police stations when they go to report the violence committed against them. We talk about educating about violence against women in Bangladesh, but in some cases, female students have been harassed by teachers in school, from the Mohila Madrasa - a girls Islamic school - to well-known higher educational institutions. On May 14, 2009, the High Court of Bangladesh pronounced a judgment to prevent sexual abuse of women at the office, educational institutions and all types of governmental, non-governmental and other organizations. Especially for minority girls and women, Bangladesh is an extremely fearful place. As soon as a girl is born into a minority family, they have to worry about whether she will be raped by Muslims and how they will save her from that fate. Obviously, not all minority girls and women are raped, but there are uncounted numbers who are, especially in Bangladesh's Hindu community. At the dawn of each day, there is another article about a minority woman or girl who either was raped, maybe even murdered, or committed suicide after rape. Mili Rani Malakar, a 13-year-old Hindu girl was abducted and gang raped by local Muslims at Sylhet on May 1, 2008; later on, with a battered body and shattered mind, out of fear and extreme shame, the poor girl committed suicide. It must be noted that it’s not the men who commit suicide out of fear and shame, but the girl who was beaten, broken and raped by beasts. It reminds me of the quote by famous U.S. author, educator and theorist Freda Adler, “Rape is the only crime in which the victim becomes the accused.” All the major religions that are practiced here in Bangladesh are male-dominated organizations. In their holy books, creation begins with a man, “Adam”, who establishes pleasure and perfection on a woman “Eve”. The Abrahamic faiths differ from one another in many things, but they are united in this beginning story, which begins the history of male domination and which ends in today's daily life practices. From Adam to the great Prophet Mohammed, all of the prophets were male. Bangladesh has a vast population practicing and following Islam in their lives. Islam initially controls their way of life. In Islam, the Prophet Mohammed left an example by having sexual relations with different women, from Aisha, the six- or seven-year-old daughter of Abu Bakr, to elderly women, as well as by having thirteen wives or concubines. In different religions, the institution of marriage has tried to restrain the male, who is normally a polygamist by nature. Especially the Prophet Mohammed, who had several wives, set an example before the followers of Islam of being an extreme polygamist. The Roman philosopher Seneca advocated that, “Injustice never rules forever.” The injustice that is going on in Bangladesh against women and girls will not continue forever if we can dig out the rotten teachings of religions, especially of Islam, that lead people to be polygamists, encourage male domination and deprive women by making them dependents. We need to hasten the day when men and women will be treated equally, when beauty will not be a curse, but will be a blessing for all. *William Nicholas* Gomes is a freelance Journalist and Human Rights Activist. They are just a victim of islam

what about the victims of hindus

rapes happening daily in India....in new delhi....

few month ago a saint(BABA) said to a person to rape her 9 yr old daughter....if he will do,he will earn lots of money.....

and what about those thousands of females died in due to dowry.....

does she was victim of Islam....

Idiot.....this word suits on you....

Law in India to punish rapist

Listen Sikander Khan- Yes few months ago a saint(BABA) in India raped a girl and the law of land punished him with help of forensic science accordingly. On other hand a rapist walks free in Islamic country because how a rape victim will bring two male witnesses. If at the time of rape there are 2 male witnesses who watched the rape without stopping the rapist it is clear that those 2 witnesses were also involved in rape. It becomes impossible for a rape victim in an Islamic country to seek judgment. If she fails to produce 2 male witnesses the victim herself threatens her life to be stoned to death i.e. SANGSAR.

Yes there are murders for dowry in India but there is strict law to punish the murderers. The dowry is a social problem not a religion-inspired phenomena in India. Not only this, in India in cases of dowry the law is provisioned in such a way that you don't need witnesses, only the forensic evidences are enough to punish the offenders. Where as in Islam "mehar" is prescribed by Koran for all Muslims to marry a girl. Mehar is a price paid by the groom to the father of the girl to buy and use the girl like a commodity. After divorce when the girl is returned, her father pays back the same amount of "mehar" to the husband. It is trade of girl in the name of marriage in Islam. Cases of rape and murders in Islamic countries are unregistered. Go ask your Iranian Ahmedinezad how many girls are raped in the name of Islam in Iranian prisons.

Look at this news from Saudi Arabia the economic jannat for Indian Muslim labours. In it muslim girls were not rescued in a fire broke out because they were not wearing Hijab, losing life of 15 girls- http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/1874471.stm this is how Islamic law- Shariyah works.
Keep your eyes open. Islam sentences death to the rape victim making the rape almost legal, on opposite Indian democracy has law to punish rapist accordingly.

Sikander Khan correct your mind and then come here to comment, people here are not ignorant like you Muslims.

Truly not justice. Unfair and sad. Well written and appreciate this as this aricle is a eye opener to the many injustice. Wish people would first understand another on the basis of universal Religion called Humanity than based on sect...

William .... when u will

William When you will care for the girls being raped in America.......

????? in every 4 mint : 1 girl is raped........

Who will care for them....

Rape in burka/veil/hijab guided by Koran & Sharia

Yes Sikander Khan,
in every 4 minute a girl is raped in America, this data is available for all to quote any where. But in Islamic countries every minute a girl is raped in BURKA/hijab by her brother/father/father in law/uncle/nephew/neighbors/brother in law.... but those all (per minute 1) rape victims keep silence and the crime goes unregistered in official documents. There are mullas who sentence stoning to death to the victim of rape if she complains and fails to bring two male witnesses.

Go ask your Muslim brother Ahmedinezad of Iran how his guards rape a virgin in the name of Allah by Sharia before her execution, read this news- http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1246443842931&pagename=JPost%...

Shame on you muhammad, Shame on Sharia, Shame on muslims who follow it.

Sikander Khan correct your knowledge before you vomit here.

very sad indeed

I think that being a female anywhere in today's society is scary. However, I feel very sad and heart broken for these girls and women who undergo the constant fear. Should I go to the police for help, I do not fear being raped or tortured in my own country. That is a shame! :(

a shame

Oops...that is to say...that is a shame that women in certain countries have to fear when when going to the police, who are supposed to protect them. For those of us women who do not need to fear this cruel action, let us be grateful!

Sickening!! Oh I'm so glad I

Sickening!! Oh I'm so glad I reside in a civilised country. Even though Muslims are 2% of our population. Rape in SOuth Africa is the highest in the world. Why they're even talking about renaming Cape Town to Rape Town. Yet many of these rapes are carried out in rural areas, far away from the long arm of the law. But what sickens me most is the high rate of child rape and pedophilia in thsi place.
